We are continuing our unit on Justice for All.

Our second story is called, “The Bracelet”.  The students have learned about the injustices put upon Japanese Americans during World War II.  They came  to see how the United States government issued a formal apology in 1989 (forty years later) to those who had been treated unfairly.

The test on “The Bracelet” will be on Wednesday, 5-23.

Please Note: Tests count 70%, quizzes 20%, and in class group projects 10% of the total literature grade.

Study the units listed on the study guide for the final examination.

Book Club

Posted on May 18th, 2011 in Uncategorized by Miss Zakoor

Miss Zakoor’s Sixth Grade Book Club is closed for the year.   I sincerely want to thank all of you parents who helped me encourage reading this year.  Your continual support with the novels each month was invaluable as was your generous donation of bagels and juice for our club dates.  The students enjoyed discussing the books as they had breakfast together.     Many, many thanks!

Let us continue to encourage reading during the remaining weeks of school and throughout the summer.  I know that our students will be preaparing for exams, but a good book is a nice break from studying.  The great majority of this sixth grade class loves a good book.  I was amazed at their hunger for reading…very impressive.   They always wanted me the announce the next book before we even had our club date!

Please note: Book Club quizzes count 20% of the literature grade.

Religion

In religion we will continue our study of the prophets of biblical Israel as well as some “modern day” prophets.  Students have learned that prophets do not so much foretell the future as talk about the present situation and perhaps what consequences might occur in the future if the current situation is not altered.  Their message centers on the covenant God made with them and how they have not lived up to that covenant:  love and worship of God and love and concern for one’s neighbor (the Ten Commandments).

Math

Rm. #205 and HR # 206

This week we continue our exploration of the world of geometry.  We will look at quadrilaterals and angle sums, similar figures, polygons, and corresponding parts of congruent figures.  For reference, see Chapter 9, lessons 8, 11, 12, and 15.  Students will also be given an extra credit assignment on geometric transformations (changing the position of a figure by translation, rotation, and reflection).  See lesson 14 for information.  Tutoring on Thursday, 3:15-3:45 and test on Friday.  Students should be reviewing/studying for their final exam.  The exam covers chapters 6, 7, 8, and 9.  My suggestion (was) is that they might take the chapter test at the end of each chapter and then check their answers with the answer key posted in their homeroom.  Any questions should be directed to me either in class or privately.
