Social Studies 7

Social Studies in the seventh grade continues use of the text World: Adventures in Time and Place by McGraw Hill and the National Geographic Society.

We will be starting with ancient Arabia and the Rise of Islam, and go on to the cultures of Europe–Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Reformation; empires of Africa, empires and cultures of Asia and the Age of Exploration.

The second part of the year will lead into more modern times with European expansion, revolutions that changed the world, then into the world at war and the aftermath in the Twentieth Century, followed by the development of new nations and an ever-changing world. Considerable material!

In addition to the main text, our students will be using the Nystrom Desk Atlas and working on numerous exercises designed to develop an understanding of an atlas and how to use it to find specific facts about our world and its various geographical regions.

Then there are my regional maps! Our students will be using their main text and Nystrom to locate countries in different regions of the world. Knowing where “foreign” nations are in relationship to the U.S. is both important and necessary in our ever-shrinking world, especially when you realize that, unless your student takes a geography elective in high school, they will never have a geography course after the seventh grade!

Grading.  Tests will count as 50% of the quarter grade, and all assignments taken together will account for the other 50%.

Tests.  As a first line of communication, I require all   tests to be returned signed as soon as possible. All tests will be sent home in Friday folders. The students understand that the returning of signed tests is considered as an assignment.

Thank you for your help and cooperation.
